'Gotham' Recap: 'Under the Knife'

The episode begins with Selina and Bruce walking under the bridge where Selina tells Bruce that Reggie is dead and she did it to protect them. Bruce says that this is far from over and that they have to find the Wayne Enterprises executive Bunderslaw and expose his corruption. Bruce says he would have safe containing any incriminating evidence or secrets. Selina asks Bruce to get him close so she can steal it. She also makes him swear not to tell anyone about her killing Reggie.

Jim finds Edward in the examination room looking for Leslie. He tells Jim she went home. We see Leslie at home in the bathtub when she hears glass break. She has two missed calls and finds out a stray cat is causing all the noise. Jim startles her and he explains to her that The Ogre kills a loved one of every cop that investigates him. He begs her to leave Gotham but she refuses. Leslie says it is nice that Jim considers her to be a loved one.

The Ogre is out at bar where we see him approach an attractive woman. The woman turns out to be Barbara. They go back to Barbara’s house where it appears that The Ogre is going to attack but when he finds out that Barbara is very depressed and not the person he thought she was, he decides not to act.

Oswald is at his club when he has a meeting with a man in charge of one of the best knife and gun crews in the city. He makes an offer to the man with the task of killing Maroni and his lieutenants. The man initially refuses, but Oswald convinces him that this could help him move up in Falcone’s world. The man tells Oswald to meet him at this bar.

Harvey and Jim meet with the detective that was assigned the investigation of the first murder committed by The Ogre. The first victim was Julie Kimbel and the detective reveals that she was a nurse at a Cosmetology office. They leave to head there and see The Ogre watching Jim and Harvey from his car.

Edward goes to find old forensic evidence on The Ogre murder cases and discovers that Ms. Kringle has bruises on her arm. They appear to be from an argument she had with her boyfriend and she tells Edward to stay out of her business. Edward has a very serious and upset look on his face as he exits the room.

Bruce tells Alfred that he is planning on attending the Wayne Enterprises Charity Ball. He is going to invite Selina and Alfred agrees to that. He approves of their “friendship” and promises to be close by if he is needed.

Harvey and Jim go to the Cosmetology office to find out some information about Julie. She was recommended by a patient but the doctor will not reveal the patient’s name. They leave there and see The Ogre’s car in the alleyway. He tries to run them over. They return to GCPD where they tell Captain Essen that it was him and that he has been tracking their investigations.

The Ogre calls Jim and tells him this is his one warning to stop pursing him before he kills someone he loves. Jim says that he is going to find him and take him down. Jim makes an announcement in front of the press where he tells the people of Gotham that there is a serial killer on the loose and that he is going to stop him.

We see Barbara preparing for the Wayne Enterprises Charity Ball. Selina tells her that she will see her there since she is going with Bruce Wayne. Bruce goes to pick up Selina for the Charity Ball and looks very smitten when he sees her dressed up.

Oswald tells Butch that Connor and his crew are on board with the plan to kill Maroni. Butch tells Oswald that Maroni is at the club now. We see Maroni talking with Oswald’s mother. He tells Oswald to sit down with them. The tension between Oswald and Maroni is at an all-time high.

Harvey finds out from the doctor that the dead girl came to the Cosmetology office by way of the Van Grute family. They are one of Gotham’s oldest families. Harvey says they might have a son. They go to investigate the Van Grute house. They see an old man attempting to hang himself. They stop him while Harvey investigates the rest of the house. Harvey yells for Jim and he comes upstairs and they both look at Constance’s rotting corpse in her bed.

Bruce and Selina are dancing at the Charity Ball while keeping an eye out for Bunderslaw. Bruce tells Selina she can never kill someone else again. They finally see Bunderslaw across the room. We see Barbara arrive at the Ball and is approached by The Ogre.

Edward confronts Ms. Kringle’s boyfriend about the bruises he gave to her. He claims she deserved it because she has a sharp tongue. Edward says he won’t let him do that to her again. Each men exchange threats and it appears we are about to see a darker side of Edward.

Harvey tells Captain Essen that the man attempting suicide was Jacob, Constance’s butler and the father of The Ogre. His theory is that The Ogre killed Constance and that Jacob has been in contact with his son. They interrogate Jacob and try to get him to give them any information. Jacob finally reveals that his son created this fantasy that he was the wealthy son of Constance. When he confronted her about acknowledging he was a part of her family, she rejected it and he killed her.

Jacob swears that he hasn’t seen his son since the day he killed Constance. Jacob shows them old pictures of his son, how he was deformed and they confirm that he was operated on by the doctor at the Cosmetology office. They now know what The Ogre looks like.

Maroni calls out Oswald in front of his mother, calling him a psychopath. He also puts his hands on his mother and Oswald vows that Maroni will pay for this. Oswald promises his mother that he is only a night club owner. It seems that his mother doesn’t believe him. A man delivers flowers to Oswald’s mother. Oswald tells the man to warn Maroni, then decides he will do it himself and kills the man.

Barbara and The Ogre are dancing and he tells her about the life and person he created himself to be. He offers to do the same for Barbara. She looks slightly tempted. Bruce greets Bunderslaw and Selina uses this opportunity to swipe the key. Selina also notices Barbara walking off with The Ogre.

Edward follows Ms. Kringle home and he waits for her boyfriend to head over. Edward confronts him and tells him to leave her alone. The two being to fight and then Edward stabs him to death. Edward looks petrified then begins laughing with an evil smile on his face.

They find out The Ogre’s real name is Jacob Van Grute. The named that he created for himself and they have a sketch picture from a decade ago. Jim thinks about his conversation he had earlier and realizes that he knows about his past relationship with Barbara. Jim races to Barbara’s apartment and Selina tells him that she left with The Ogre.

We see Barbara and The Ogre back at his apartment. She opens the door to what appears to his torture room. He walks up next to her and they just stare at each other…
