While former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush doesn’t have to do much to appeal to Hispanic voters if he decides to run for president in 2016, he apparently thought it was OK to consider himself Hispanic on a 2009 voter registration form.
The New York Times obtained a 2009 voter-registration application from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, which does show that Bush check “Hispanic” in the race/ethnicity section of the form.
While Bush’s spokeswoman didn’t comment on the Times report, Bush tried to laugh it off as a joke on Twitter. “My mistake! Don’t think I’ve fooled anyone,” he wrote to his son.
Bush was born in Texas and is, of course, a member of one of America’s most well-known political families. Still, he does have connections with the Hispanic community, as his wife, Columba, was born in Mexico and he is fluent in Spanish. He also lived in Venezuela for two years.
He still hasn’t officially announced his plans to run for president in 2016, but it is widely expected that he will.
