Joni Mitchell is not in a coma, 'full recovery' still expected

Just hours after a report said that legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell is in a coma and unresponsive, her team insists that she is alert and should make a full recovery.

As previously reported, TMZ claimed on Tuesday that the “Big Yellow Taxi” singer was in a coma. They cited legal documents filed by her close friend, Leslie Morris, for conservatorship of her affairs that claimed that Mitchell is so “impaired as to be incapable of being assessed."

However, after that report was published, Mitchell’s team posted a new statement on her website, which was the first official update on her health since April 3. They noted that Morris had approved of the official statement.

“Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma,” the statement reads. “Joni is still in the hospital - but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected. The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority - in the absence of 24-hour doctor care - to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital. As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight. Please continue to keep Joni in your thoughts.”

After that statement, TMZ appeared to try to back up its original report by adding a copy of Morris’ legal documents.

Mitchell has been in the hospital since March 31 when she was found unconscious. The singer, who is also known for her work as a painter, has not recorded a new album since 2007.

Her fans are being asked to post get-well messages at WeLoveYouJoni.com.
