McDonald’s to raise wages to $10 an hour

McDonald’s announced on Wednesday that it would raise wages for some 90,000 workers to around $10 an hour.

The Wall Street Journal reported that newly appointed Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook said that raising wages was in response to employee surveys and his hope to revive sales at the fast-food restaurant.

“Motivated teams deliver better customer service,” he said, “and delivering better customer service in our restaurants is clearly going to be a vital part of our turnaround.”

Reuters noted that the company will also be adding benefit packages, however, those benefits and wage hikes will only be for employees at a restaurant not operated as a franchise. The majority of McDonald’s U.S. restaurants are franchise-owned.

The pay increase and benefits for around 1,500 restaurants will go into effect on July 1. Hourly pay will then go to $1 above the locally mandated minimum wage and by 2016 will exceed $10.

Not every employee is happy about the wage hike though.

Supporters of the "Fight for $15" movement say it is not enough and some protests are planned throughout the country for Thursday.
