Michael Brown’s parents to file civil suit against city of Ferguson

The parents of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager who was shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer last year, will file a wrongful death suit against the city.

The Associated Press noted that the Brown family was expected to file such a lawsuit and their plans to do so were announced by their lawyers on Wednesday evening.

The specifics of the suit will be released after a press conference the family is holding in front of the St. Louis County courthouse on Thursday around 10:30 a.m. local time.

As previously reported, on Aug. 9, Brown was fatally shot by Officer Darren Wilson during a confrontation. In November, a grand jury decided not to bring charges against the officer. That announcement sparked nationwide protests and Wilson retired from the police department.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Justice also investigated the case and decided not to charge the former officer. The DOJ’s findings did, however, accuse the Ferguson Police Department of discriminating against the city’s black residents in order to generate revenue.

After the DOJ’s investigation concluded, Brown’s parents said that a lawsuit was imminent.
