MTV gets bloody and meta with the first 'Scream' TV series trailer

We're just a few months away from the premiere of the MTV Scream series, and now we have our first official look at footage from the show.

The network premiered the first trailer for the show at the MTV movie awards last night.

The trailer is pretty vague on the actual plot, but still offers up what you'd probably expect from a modern Scream TV show. We first see a girl being horrified by a murder as she's alone at her house, which is pretty classic Scream, though now she's being harassed via text rather than phone call. There's also a scene of a girl being attacked in a garage, reminiscent of a classic moment from the original film.

We then get some quick glimpses at bloody deaths and relationship drama between the characters, and it seems the show will emphasize the relationship drama as we might expect from an MTV series. But the trailer still emphasizes the idea that all of these characters have secrets and that the killer could be anyone, which of course is a staple of the Scream franchise.

The Scream movies are also known for getting pretty meta, referencing their own place in the horror canon and constantly critiquing horror tropes. This trailer carries that over, with a voiceover narration saying what a lot of fans are probably thinking: "You can't do a slasher movie as a TV series." We'll have to see if Scream is able to subvert those expectations, or if that statement ends up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

MTV also released two other promos for the film, the first focusing a bit more on the kills, and the second getting even more meta.

As we previously reported, MTV's Scream will center around a viral video which leads to a series of gruesome murders. It stars Willa Fitzgerald, Bex Taylor-Klaus, John Karna and Carlson Young. Wes Craven, director of the Scream films, will serve as executive producer.

Though this trailer has the blood, the kills and the meta commentary, the show will be straying from the movies a bit by not actually having the Ghostface mask, according to Entertainment Weekly. Instead the show will have its own version of the mask which is described as darker and more grounded.

Scream premieres June 30 on MTV.
