Nicole Kidman returning to the London stage for first time since 1998

For the first time in 17 years, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman will be seen on the London stage. She will make her West End return in Photograph 51, a play about the discovery of the DNA double helix structure.

The play was written by Anna Ziegler and will star Kidman as Rosalind Franklin, who was never awarded for her work in her lifetime. According to The Telegraph, Ziegler named the play after the x-ray crystallography image of the DNA structure Franklin made in 1952. She died in 1958 from ovarian cancer at age 37.

Kidman, who was last seen on the big screen in Paddington, has been interested in taking to the stage for the first time since 1998 for awhile. The Guardian notes that she was rumored to be starring in an adaptation of Ivan Turgenev’s A Month in the Country previously. It’s possible that she could do that after Photograph 51.

When Kidman last took the West End stage, she starred in David Hare’s The Blue Room, which was a big hit in 1998. Her performance was famously dubbed “pure theatrical Viagra” by Telegraph writer Charles Spencer.

Photograph 51 will be staged at the Noel Coward Theatre from Sept. 5 to Nov. 21. Tickets will cost just £10.

Kidman’s upcoming films include Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert, Strangeland and The Family Fang. She’s currently filming Lion with Rooney Mara and Dev Patel.
