Patrick Dempsey already has another project after 'Grey's Anatomy' shocker

Shonda Rhimes knows how to shock her shows’ fans and probably dropped the biggest one of her career last night on Grey’s Anatomy. In the Season 11’s penultimate episode, Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. Derek Shepherd was killed.

What made Derek’s death more shocking to fans was the fact that Dempsey had signed a two-year contract extension last year, which would cover season 11 and season 12. In an Entertainment Weekly interview before the episode aired, Dempsey said that his character’s death just “kind of happened” and he liked how it happened.

“It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good,” Dempsey said. “I like the way it has all played out.”

He explained that he is still “processing” Derek’s death.

Rhimes also gave EW a statement on Derek’s death, writing that, “His loss will be felt by all.”

“Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life,” Rhimes added. “The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”

So when is the next time we will see Dempsey? He told EW that he’s working on a Sundance TV series called The Limit, which is a period drama about car racing in the ‘60s. Like many other big stars, he would rather do a show that’s just 10-12 episodes a season instead of 24.
