Rescuers continue to search for those who went missing during Alabama regatta

Rescue workers are continuing to search for four missing boaters who became lost at sea after a powerful storm interrupted an Alabama regatta over the weekend.

Reuters noted that the Coast Guard is still trying to locate the boaters who were registered for the 55th annual Dauphin Island Race. The regatta included about 200 people and 100 sailboats.

Rescuers spent most of Sunday canvassing the waters of Mobile Bay and were assisted by planes and helicopters. In all, they have searched thousands of square miles so far. However, a bit of inclement weather expected to roll through late Monday could hamper some of the efforts.

The Associated Press noted that Gary Garner, who organized the race, said everyone involved is "heartbroken."

"We are helping and cooperating fully with the U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities in accounting for all of the sailors," he said in a statement.

Officials have not yet announced whether they will continue with the regatta.
