Tigers' Justin Verlander to start season on DL

Justin Verlander will not get to start Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers. Instead, he will start the 2015 season on the disabled list.

Manager Brad Ausmus made the announcement today. It will be the first time Verlander will spend time on the DL in his career, notes The Detroit Free Press. He has been suffering from a sore tricep during Spring Training.

Ausmus was “optimistic” that Verlander could start on April 12 against the Cleveland Indians.

“His arm will let us know when he can get back on the mound,” Ausmus said. “Cautiously optimistic he'll get back on the mound Saturday or Sunday.”

Before the injury, the Tigers were happy with Verlander’s performance this spring. As ESPN points out, his fastball reached between 94 and 96 mph.

Verlander, 32, won the AL Cy Young and AL MVP awards in 2011 and is a six-time All Star. He had a down year in 2014 though, with a 15-12 record and a 4.54 ERA.

The Tigers open at home against the Minnesota Twins on Monday. David Price will be the starter.
