Tom Brokaw finally comments on Brian Williams' suspension: it's a 'really, really serious case'

There has been constant speculation about how former NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw feels about his successor, Brian Williams, and Williams’ suspension for exaggerated stories. Brokaw finally broke his silence in Chicago Monday night, touching on the controversy and his own relationship with Williams.

During the event at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, Brokaw stressed that there is still an ongoing internal investigation, led by Richard Esposito.

“And the important thing is that the process is very carefully constructed, and we owe it to everybody, including Brian and his family and certainly the people who work at NBC News who risk their lives everyday, and to the integrity of what NBC News has stood for all these years -- to let the process play out, to hear what the final conclusions are and then deal with it at that point,” Brokaw said, reports CNN Monday.

Brokaw called the situation a “really, really serious case.”

In February, Williams was suspended for six months without pay. Since then, Brokaw has remained mostly quiet. He did deny reports that he was calling for Williams’ firing. Then, there was a report from Vanity Fair last week that claimed that Brokaw didn’t have a good relationship with Williams at all.

While Brokaw slammed the Vanity Fair report as “completely unsourced,” he didn’t say that he had a great relationship with Williams.

“Brian and I had a cordial relationship,” Brokaw said, notes Mediate. “You know, it was tricky because he succeeded me and I had my own strong feelings about how things should be done, but I never interfered with it. And I would make suggestions from time to time.”

The scandal ended up costing NBC News chairman Pat Fili-Krushel her job as well. She was replaced with former NBC News President Andrew Lack in March.
