US couple sentenced to prison terms for suitcase murder in Bali

A man and woman were each given prison terms Tuesday for the murder of the woman’s mother at a Bali resort last year.

The AFP noted that Tommy Schaefer, 21, and Heather Mack, 19, were found guilty of the murder of 62-year-old Sheila von Wiese Mack.

Schaefer was given a sentence of 18 years in prison after being found guilty of premeditated murder. His girlfriend and the victim’s daughter, was found guilty of assisting in the crime and sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

As previously reported, authorities discovered the victim’s body beaten and stuffed in a suitcase at the upscale St. Regis Bali Resort last August. The young couple was then sought for the murder and apprehended in another part of the island.

Mack was 18 and pregnant at the time. She has since given birth to her child, which is why the judges decided to give her a lighter prison sentence.

At the trail she said that she loved and misses her mother.
