2-year-old struck, killed by falling bricks in New York City

Authorities said a 2-year-old was struck and killed by falling bricks from a building while she sat on a bench with her grandmother.

NBC New York noted that the little girl, Greta Greene, and her grandmother, Susan Fierson, 60, were both hit by bricks that fell from an Upper West Side building on Sunday. A source close to the investigation has said that the bricks fell from a window ledge on the eighth floor.

The toddler was hit in the head and her grandmother was struck in the leg. Nurses at the scene tried to resuscitate the child, but were unsuccessful. She and Fierson were then rushed to a nearby hospital.

The grandmother was treated for a serious leg injury and Greene was put on life support, but died Monday.

The New York Daily News reported that her parents decided to donate their daughter's organs.

The family who owns the building released the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greta Greene's family. We are fully cooperating with city emergency response agencies and the Department of Buildings to determine the cause of this horrible incident and to safeguard the public.”
