Attorney for Amtrak engineer says client is ‘distraught,’ does not remember crash

The attorney for the man who was driving the Amtrak train before it derailed in Philadelphia Tuesday night said his client is “very distraught” and does not remember the crash.

Good Morning America noted that Robert Goggin, attorney for Brandon Bostian, 32, said that the engineer was extremely “distraught” to learn that there had been fatalities, but cannot recall the crash happening.

“He remembers driving the train,” Goggin said. “He remembers going to that area generally, [but] has absolutely no recollection of the incident or anything unusual. He recalls -- the next thing he recalls is being thrown around, coming to, finding his bag, getting his cell phone and dialing 911.”

Goggin added that Bostian does not suffer from any medical issues and is cooperating with authorities.

As previously reported, eight people were killed and around 200 were injured when the train derailed at the Frankford Junction in Philadelphia.

The train’s data recorder that was recovered revealed that it was going 106 mph, which is more than double the 50 mph speed limit. Just before the recording ended, Bostian hit the emergency brake and was going 102 mph.

Bostian sustained a concussion and injuries to his legs when the train went off the tracks.
