Blizzard bans 100,000 'World of Warcraft' accounts for using bots

Blizzard said on Thursday that it has banned a “large number” of World of Warcraft players who were using bots to keep their characters playing, even while they weren’t physically at the controls. While no specific number was revealed the developer, reports suggest that the number of accounts affected are over 100,000.

“We’ve recently taken action against a large number of World of Warcraft accounts that were found to be using third-party programs that automate gameplay, known as ‘bots,’” Blizzard said in a statement. “We’re committed to providing an equal and fair playing field for everyone in World of Warcraft, and will continue to take action against those found in violation of our Terms of Use. Cheating of any form will not be tolerated.”

According to Kokatu, a screenshot of a chat with a Game Master, posted on Reddit, revealed that over 100,000 accounts were banned.

That may sound like a small number, considering that there are 7.1 million WoW players, but the move is a big deal, reminding players that cheating isn’t allowed. As PCGamer reports, WoW community manager Micah Whipple had to remind users that automating all actions is still violating the terms of use.

The bans were not permanent, so players will be able to return in six months.
