David Letterman says goodbye to the ‘Late Show’ as only Dave could (Video)

After 33 years of hosting a show on late night television, David Letterman said goodbye to The Late Show in the way only he could. The show was structured mostly like a regular show, including taped skits, a Top 10 and a musical performance. It wasn’t nostalgic, but it was still absurd.

During his monologue, Letterman joked about his future, suggesting that he could become the face of Scientology or maybe he and Paul Scheffer will finally perform their white tiger act in Las Vegas. But the show opened with an appearance from Presidents George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, who all echoed President Gerald R. Ford’s words that “Our long national nightmare is over... David Letterman is retiring.”

Other segments during the show included a tribute to his skits with children, a short behind-the-scenes look at how one of the most recent shows was put together and a replay of Letterman torturing Taco Bell customers.

For the last ever Top 10 list, Letterman had a roster of superstars who have made frequent appearances on the show. That included Jim Carrey, who looked like he just walked out of a cave; Bill Murray, who was on the night before; Alec Baldwin; Tina Fey; Peyton Manning; Barbara Walters; and Chris Rock. They all listed things they wish they could have said to Dave.

Letterman also expressed confidence in Stephen Colbert, who will be replacing him in September.

The show ended with a performance from the Foo Fighters, who are Dave’s favorite band. As they played out the show - and Letterman’s run on TV - clips from other famous Letterman moments were played.

Before the Foo Fighters took the stage, Letterman thanked everyone for their support. “In light of all of this praise - merited or not - do me a favor, save a little for my funeral!”

Don’t worry Dave, we will certainly have much more to say about your career when that happens. Maybe by then, he will be as tall as Peyton Manning.
