Documentary on George Miller's cancelled 'Justice League' movie in the works

For some reason, movies that never happened are much more fascinating than ones that did. Whether it is Tim Burton’s Superman movie with Nicholas Cage or Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon, these tantalizing “what ifs” gives us topics to endlessly debate on. One of the greatest “what ifs” in movie history actually only happened a few years ago, when Warner Bros. decided not to make a Justice League movie directed by Mad Max: Fury Road’s George Miller.

Director Ryan Unicomb and his producers, Aaron Carter and Steven Caldwell, told Australia’s Inside Film Monday that they are working on a documentary to tell the story of the Miller film, which was cancelled in 2008.

Film author Maria Lewis will help them put together the film and they hope to interview the cast and crew. In addition to looking at what the movie would have been like, they will also explore how the film affected the Australian movie industry, since Miller had planned on shooting it in Australia.

The filmmakers haven’t been able to get in contact with Miller or Miller’s producing partner, Doug Mitchell.

“I have always been fascinated with project, which would be in the same vein as 2013’s Jodorowsky’s Dune and this year’s The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, about a Superman movie that Tim Burton was to direct in the 1990s,” Unicomb told Inside Film.

They do have some private investors interested, but they may wind up using a crowdsourcing site. That’s how The Death of Superman Lives was made.

Miller’s Justice League movie was first announced in 2007, with dreams of it hitting theaters in 2009. However, the writer’s strike in the U.S. put the film on ice and it was ultimately cancelled. Another concern might have been how audiences would take it, since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy was still ongoing and Justice League would have featured a different Batman. Armie Hammer was cast as the Dark Knight.

The Justice League will finally hit theaters in November 2017 with the first of Zack Snyder’s two-part movie as part of the DC Cinematic Universe established in 2013’s Man of Steel.

There’s no word on when Unicomb hopes to get his film out, but hopefully it won’t meet the same fate as his subject.
