Former tennis champ Bob Hewitt sentenced to 6 years for rape

Retired tennis doubles champion Bob Hewitt has been sentenced to six years in a South-African prison for the rape and sexual assault of three young girls.

The Associated Press noted that on Monday, Judge Bert Bam handed down an eight-year sentence to Hewitt in which two of those years are suspended.

In addition to the prison sentence, Bam ordered the 75-year-old to pay $8,500 to state-run campaigns against sexual violence.

BBC News noted that Hewitt was found guilty last March on two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against girls he coached in the '80s and '90s.

One of the victims testified that she was just twelve-years-old when the former tennis star assaulted her.

As a player, Hewitt won nine Grand Slam doubles and six mixed doubles titles while playing with some of the best in the business including Billie Jean King.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992, but suspended in 2012 after the allegations came to light.
