Harry Shearer leaving 'The Simpsons' after 26 seasons, creator Al Jean says Maggie 'took it hard'

Harry Shearer, who voices characters like Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Waylon Smithers and Principal Skinner on The Simpsons since its inception, has announced he’s leaving the show.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday night, Shearer indicated he parted ways with the show because of a disagreement with executive producer James L. Brooks about being able to other projects.

“From James L. Brooks' lawyer: ‘show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best,’” he first wrote, adding, “This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best.”

He concluded with, “Thanks, Simpsons fans, for your support.”

In an email to New York Times, Simpsons creator Al Jean, wrote that Shearer “passed” on the deal offered to the rest of the cast. He added, “Maggie took it hard.”

Shearer has been on the show since its start in 1989. Earlier this month it was announced Fox had renewed the show for a least another two seasons; it’s currently in its 26th season.
