Kanye West gets censored for full minute during Billboard Music Awards

Last night at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards didn’t go quite as well as Kanye West planned. First, Kendall and Kylie Jenner were booed during his introduction and then his performance was censored during the broadcast. He didn’t just have a couple of curses bleeped, though. ABC bleeped a full minute of the appearance.

West, who was nearly invisible behind a sheet of pyrotechnic smoke, performed “All Day” from his upcoming album, Swish, and the Yeezus track “Black Skinhead.” He was onstage for just over five minutes, but Rolling Stone calculated that only 4 minutes and 16 seconds were audible.

Why would Billboard and ABC agree to let West perform if they were only going to censor him? Sources told TMZ that he never did a dress rehearsal, so producers didn’t know what to really expect. He did know he was going to be on national television, so they might have expected him to perform clean versions of the songs. Of course, he might have decided to perform the songs as originally written just to see if he could get anything past the censors. It clearly didn’t work.

Even before the performance, things weren’t going so well. Kendall and Kylie Jenner were both booed by the audience when they mentioned West during their introduction.
