Ryan Tannehill signs contract extension with Dolphins

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill signed a contract extension with the Miami Dolphins on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, the extension is for four years and $77.7 million. Tannehill is now signed through 2020. The Dolphins used their fifth-year, $16.2 million option on Tannehill last month. Tannehill’s contract with the Dolphins is now worth a total of $96 million with $45 million guaranteed. He is the first quarterback from the 2012 draft class to receive an extension.

''You look back at all of the great players over the years, and most of them spent a significant amount of time in one place,'' Tannehill told the Dolphins website. ''I'm blessed to be in this position to be here for the next six years.''

Tannehill is entering his fourth year with the Dolphins. He was the Dolphins 17th starting quarterback since 2000, when he joined the Dolphins as a rookie. He is now the Dolphins franchise quarterback, their first franchise quarterback since Dan Marino. Last year he threw for 4,045 yards and 27 touchdowns, with a 92.8 passer rating, all career highs, according to Fox Sports. Tannehill has thrown for 11,252 yards, 63 touchdowns, and has 42 interceptions in three seasons.

In his first three seasons Tannehill has started every game and improved each year. The Dolphins are 23-25 with Tannehill as the quarterback, but they haven’t made the playoffs with him yet.
