Starbucks, Spotify ink deal that allows baristas to create playlists and customers to give feedback

Starbucks and Spotify have inked a deal so that customers of the coffee chain can listen to music created by its baristas, then give feedback through their app.

After Starbucks stopped selling albums at the front counter back in March after 20 years, this move allows them to stay connected with music lovers and foray into the streaming world.

Fortune reports Spotify users will be able to earn loyalty points with this new partnership through the My Starbucks Reward program.

Chief executive officer of Spotify, Daniel Ek, told Bloomberg, “We’re really making the baristas the D.J.”

After the baristas make playlists, customers have the ability to give feedback and influence which songs stay on those lists. This gives Spotify the opportunity to promote Spotify Premium and Starbucks the opportunity to keep their music roots.

“For many, many years, music has been a very significant part of the Starbucks experience. The music in our stores gave us license over the years to be in the physical CD business and as many of you know that turned into a very, big and important business for Starbucks,” said Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz.
