This Week in Television (5/25-5/31)

With every new television season, a rebirth of sorts occurs. Old shows die and new shows are born. Networks are popping out all types of shows this week. Some bring intrigue, while others leave us all scratching our heads. So here we are, to give you a quick rundown on which premieres to watch….and which to avoid in This Week in Television:

Tuesday
America’s Got Talent -- NBC @ 8/7c (Season Premiere)
Host Nick Cannon, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, former Spice Girl Mel B and shock jock Howard Stern all return for the 10th (YES 10TH!) season of America’s Got Talent. This show has been on the air for 9 years. Where has the time gone?

For me, this show is all about the auditions. I’ve seen every single season since it began back in 2006 and before every one I try to stay interested once the audition round passes. But I just…can’t. Even with that, I’d still encourage people to at least catch the first round. If you can manage to make it through all the sappy sob stories, it should be an enjoyable viewing experience.

My Take: Will watch. Auditions always brings laughs.

Extreme Weight Loss -- ABC @ 9/8c (Season Premiere)
ABC’s Extreme Weight Loss returns for its fifth season. The show follows around extremely overweight participants as they go through strenuous training and lifestyle changes over the course of a year. Trainer Chris Powell moves in with the contestant and helps give encouragement and tips on ways to get them along with their journey.

It’s kind of like Biggest Loser but without the competitions, overly aggressive trainers and…..ok so it’s not like Biggest Loser. Although it isn’t as “intense” the show is still worth a shot.

My Take: Again, if you can make it past the sob stories, this is actually an enjoyable show.

I Can Do That -- NBC @ 10/9c (Series Premiere)
The new series will be hosted by funnyman, Marlon Wayans (of Scary Movie fame). Six celebs will compete in pairs over the course of the six week series. The six participants are former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, comedian Jeff Dye, Dancing with the Stars alum Cheryl Burke, former Jonas Brother member Joe Jonas, singer Ciara and actor Alan Ritchson. Quite the group there. I’m sure people will be tuning in in droves to watch those six in action…

The celebs will also have the help of several guest stars who work in other entertainment fields. And at the shows end, one celeb will be crowned the “Ultimate Entertainment.” *cue laughs*

Now, I’m not saying this show is going to bomb but….

And I’m sure the show will last through its initial six episode run but I have no inkling as to whether the premise is interesting enough to survive past that. However, because it doesn’t interfere with my current Tuesday night favorite, iZombie, I’ll give it a shot. That is if I even remember to watch.

My Take: Uhm…..maybe?

Wednesday
The Briefcase -- CBS @ 8/7c (Series Premiere)
In what is bound to be cancelled by seasons end, comes the incredibly messed up The Briefcase. The show that essentially praying on two poor, financially struggling families by pitting them against each other for a briefcase filled with $101,000.

Each family can either keep all the money, give it all way or split the difference to another family in need. They are told that they must do so within 72 hours.
During that time they are then sent several texts detailing the OTHER families sob stories (the purpose: emotional manipulation, I suppose) to make the decision more difficult. However, unbeknownst to them, by the end of that time frame they will learn that the other family has to make that same choice as well. They are then brought face to face to make their final decision.

Hopefully there's some swerve where both families will somehow benefit from this. Because losing out on that much money because another family upped you in a contest of “who has the sadder story” would suck.

My Take: No. Just no.

Bullseye -- FOX @ 9/8c (Series Premiere)
Twilight’s Kellan Lutz has found himself a new gig! Lutz is hosting the new Fox game show, Bullseye. Similar to Fear Factor, the show will feature four men and four women competing against one another in a series of mental and physical stunts. Comedian Godfrey is also said to be a cohost.

My Take: I was obsessed with Fear Factor growing up. So even though I have a strong feeling that this one might be DOA, I still plan to give it a chance.

Thursday
Aquarius -- NBC @ 9/8c (Series Premiere)
NBC is rolling out a yet another crime drama. The show is attempting to blend fact and fiction surrounding the happenings of cult leader Charles Manson. David Duchovny stars as police sergeant, Sam Hodiak, who alongside his partner Brian Shafe (played by Grey Damon) goes undercover to investigate Manson, who may have involvement in the disappearance of a young girl. The story is said to be set in the 1960s, a few years before the vicious murder of Sharon Tate.

Based on the promos, I’m hoping that this one sticks. At least so I can watch Grey Damon. *hearteyes*

My Take: The one “Can’t Miss” premiere this week. Now whether it lives up to expectations is another story.
