4 tourists to be deported after pleading guilty to posing nude on mountain

Four tourists in Malaysia are set to be deported after they plead guilty to public obscenity on Friday.

The New York Times noted that attorney Ronny Cham said Eleanor Hawkins, from England; Dutchman Dylan Snel; Lindsey Peterson and his sister Danielle Peterson of Canada plead guilty and were fined $1,300. They each served three-day jail sentences and scheduled to be fly back to their countries on Saturday morning.

They were facing a sentence of three years behind bars, but Judge Dean Wayne Daly said they appeared to be remorseful and decided against that sentence.

As previously reported, the group was arrested for taking nude photos atop Mount Kinabalu last month. The mountain is considered sacred by most locals and they some even thought that the tourists’ actions caused an earthquake that hit the country on June 5.

Malaysian authorities said that they were seeking to arrest six other trekkers who they believed also disrobed on the mountain, but those tourists are thought to have already left the country.
