BBC reporter falsely tweets Queen Elizabeth II died

A BBC reporter mistakenly tweeted that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away on Wednesday and they have since apologized in a statement.

A reporter for BBC's Urdu-language service, Ahmen Khawaja, tweeted "Queen Elizabrth has died,” with the Queen’s name spelled wrong and all.

It was then reported on by other news outlets like Germany’s Bild and CNN, which forced the BBC to explain what happened.

"During a technical rehearsal for an obituary, tweets were mistakenly sent from the account of a BBC journalist,” they said in a statement, NBC News reports. “The tweets were swiftly deleted and we apologize for any offence."

As for Khawaja, she deleted the tweet and followed up with, “False Alarm: Have deleted previous tweets!!”

The rumor began when the BBC reporter also tweeted that the Queen was being "treated" at King Edward VII Hospital in London, however, she was just there for her annual medical checkup and she left as soon as she was finished.

Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 89th birthday on April 21.
