Brian Williams staying at NBC News, but Lester Holt gets ‘Nightly’ anchor job

NBC News is expected to announce a decision of Brian Williams’ future, but it will not involve him returning to the NBC Nightly News anchor desk. Instead, Lester Hot, who has held down the fort during Williams’ six-month suspension, is expected to be named the permanent Nightly News anchor.

Sources told the New York Times that the new role for Williams will have him primarily working on MSNBC to report breaking news to start easing him back on. CNNMoney, which first reported on Williams’ future, added that Holt will definitely be named permanent anchor for the network’s national evening news broadcast.

CNN’s source said that Williams “will be the face of MSNBC.” The cable network could use a shake-up, as its ratings have fallen far behind Fox News and even CNN.

Williams was suspended for six months in February after it was discovered that he was not telling the truth when it came to a story about him being on a helicopter during the Iraq War that was hit by an RPG in 2003. NBC News’ internal investigation reportedly found other instances of embellishments in stories Williams told.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Williams’ attorney, Robert Barnett, was making it hard for NBC to negotiate his future. But clearly, they must have reached some kind of agreement.

NBC is expected to announce Williams’ future today.
