Carnival Cruise Line tries to eliminate booze smuggling by banning bottled non-alcoholic beverages

In an effort to stop passengers from smuggling alcohol on their cruise ships, Carnival Cruise Line has implemented a new policy on all bottled beverages.

The company announced this week that they’re banning all bottled beverages from being brought on-board their ships in order to eliminate liquor being disguised as water or soda.

This doesn’t mean passengers can’t bring non-alcoholic drinks on-board at all; cans and cartons are still permitted.

“Bottled beverages are the most common means by which guests attempt to smuggle alcohol on board which necessitates bottles be individually examined by security personnel,” Carnival said in a statement, Miami Herald reports.

They went on to say that not only does checking suspicious bottles delay the “embarkation process,” it also appears that “when behavioral issues occur on board and are ultimately investigated, smuggled alcohol often appears to be a factor.”

MyFoxOrlando reports cases of bottled water are available online ahead of the cruise for $2.99 plus tax or on the ship for $4.99.

The ban starts on July 9.
