Eli Roth tapped to direct Warner Bros. killer shark movie 'Meg'

The name Meg doesn’t exactly conjure up images of killer sharks, but Warner Bros. and actor/director Eli Roth are hoping to change that. Roth has been hired by the studio to direct the long-gestating Meg.

The news of Roth’s hiring was first reported by Variety and could help end Hollywood’s 20-year journey to bring Steve Alten’s novel to the big screen. Roth is still in talks for the gig and the movie will be produced by Atelles Entertainment and Maedey Productions. Gravity Pictures will co-produce and will distribute it in China.

Meg centers on two men hoping to stop a giant ancient shark known as a Megaladon that is threatening California. The project was initially set up at Disney, but the studio backed away from the material after 1999’s Deep Blue Sea failed.

Roth is actually a big shark fan, so it’s no surprise that he got interested in the project. He is going to even host Discovery Channel’s Shark After Dark during Shark Week next month.

Roth’s latest directing effort is Knock Knock with Keanu Reeves. That’s set to open later this year.
