Family of woman hit with broken bat at Fenway Park ask for privacy as she remains in 'serious' condition

A Boston woman who suffered injuries after being struck by a baseball bat at a game Friday night is in ‘serious’ condition as her family requests privacy.

According to the Associated Press, the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics were playing when the woman was injured during the second inning. Oakland’s Brett Lawrie ended up breaking his bat and part of it went into the stands.

The woman was taken to Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. A spokeswoman for the Boston police department, Rachel McGuire, said the woman’s condition was listed as “serious but stable.”

A witness said that when the bat came in, he said the impact was “violent. She bled a lot.”

She was attending the game with a man and a little boy. The man attempted to aid the woman after she was hit while people beside them did their best to comfort the child.

John Farrell, manager for the Red Sox, said “First and foremost, our thoughts and concern, and certainly our prayers, go out to the woman that was struck with the bat, her and her family.”

The Boston Globe identified the woman as 44-year-old Tonya Carpenter. Her former brother-in-law, Matthew Carpenter, said her former boss had accompanied her and her son, Aidan to the game.

Her ex-husband, George Carpenter, reportedly immediately went to the hospital after learning of the incident.

Her family also asked for privacy as she recovers. A statement from the family read, “Tonya’s family and loved ones are grateful to all who have reached out with thoughts and prayers.”
