Michael Douglas talks origin of sex addiction rumors, love for Catherine Zeta-Jones

Michael Douglas has been linked to rumors he was treated for sex addiction in the ‘90s for two decades now and he’s now setting them straight.

The actor spent time in rehab for an alcohol addiction right on the heels of the release of his film Basic Instinct, which he blames for a “clever” journalist in London lumping in his on-screen character to his real life.

“I had an alcohol issue — I’d just lost my stepfather and it was a good rehab session; it certainly helped me find out a couple of things,” he explained to Event Magazine.

"Basic Instinct had just come out and I don’t remember who the clever editor was in London, but they came up with sex addiction,” he continued. “It became a new disease. No one had heard of that up until then, but it’s stuck with me ever since.”

He also discussed his brief separation from his wife of almost 15 years, Catherine Zeta Jones, saying their time apart was a “bump in the road” but for the better.

“I love Catherine as much, more than I ever have. And hopefully the feeling’s mutual,” he gushed. "We worked things out – if both people want to work something out and make it better, you can do it. You can’t do it if it’s just one person.”
