Mother, child found alive days after plane crash in Colombia

Colombian authorities said that a young mother and her child were found alive days after their plane crashed in the jungle.

The Associated Press noted Maria Nelly Murillo, 18 and her one-year-old son were found by rescuers in a remote area of western Colombia not far from where their plane went down Saturday.

Murillo and her child were traveling on an aircraft that was carrying fish and coconuts from Nuqui to Quibdo when it crashed.

The pilot, Carlos Mario Ceballos, was killed, but miraculously the mother and child survived and lived off coconut water for the next several days. When the rescue team located them on Wednesday Murillo only had a few burns and some bruising, but even more amazing was that her baby appeared to be in good health.

"It's a miracle. It is a very wild area and it was a catastrophic accident," said Col Hector Carrascal of the Colombian Air Force.

BBC News noted that both mother and son were transported to a hospital in Quibdo.
