New York Yankees send David Carpenter to Washington Nationals for Tony Renda

The New York Yankees sent right-handed reliever David Carpenter to the Washington Nationals on Thursday. They will get minor league second baseman Tony Renda in return.

Carpenter was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves in January. The Yankees designated him for assignment on June 3. He has struggled this season, going 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA in 22 games with the Yankees, according to the Associated Press. Carpenter is 11-11 with a 2.73 ERA in his major league career.

"For whatever reason, he never got on a roll for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "At times, it was a struggle. He was someone that we expected to be a big part of our bullpen. He worked extremely hard, he was great in the clubhouse. It's just unfortunate."

Renda was a second-round draft pick in 2012. He was ranked as the 12th best Nationals prospect by Baseball America. He was hitting .267 with 31 runs, 10 doubles, one triple, one homerun, 23 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases with the Nationals Double-A Harrisburg team this season, according to MLB.com. In four seasons in the minors Renda has .288 average and.366 on-base percentage with 77 steals.

The Nationals moved outfielder Nate McClouth from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the roster for Carpenter.
