'Pong,' 'Super Mario Bros.' and 'Pac-Man' among first World Video Game Hall of Fame inductees

The first inductees joining the World Video Game Hall of Fame is similar to the first class of Baseball Hall of Famers. Like those players, the games are among the most well-known in the world and some are even still played, over four decades after they were introduced.

The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, unveiled the class Thursday afternoon.

The oldest game is Atari’s Pong, which was easily the first successful video game and introduced in 1972. A home version made video games outside of arcades possible in 1975. All these decades later, we still have those blips and beeps in our head.

Another icon of the arcade generation, Pac-Man, is a member of the class. Ever since it was created in 1980, that little Pac-Man character remains one of the most iconic symbols of video games known around the world. He is even a major part of the Pixels trailer.

Of course, Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. must be a member. Introduced in 1985, the game is still among the best-selling video games ever. Plus, Mario has to be the most famous plumber ever created.

Tetris is also still widely popular and playable on everything from televisions to mobile phones. It’s also incredibly addicting, so you know what we’re doing right after work today.

One of the most iconic PC games ever created is DOOM, which helped popularize the first-person shooter game. Released in 1993, it was the first video game to be mired in controversy, sparking a debate over the role of violence in video games.

The most recent game inducted is World Of Warcraft, which was first released in 1997 and is still played. It is the best-selling and most widely known MMORPG ever created. The game is such a pop culture phenomenon that South Park made a whole episode using the game.
