San Diego Padres fire manager Bud Black after slow start

The San Diego Padres fired manager Bud Black on Monday after a slow start to the season.

The Padres will immediately begin looking for an interim manager for the rest of the season. Bench coach Dave Roberts will serve as manager until an interim manager can be found, according to the Associated Press. The slow start is a surprise since the Padres added Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Wil Myers, Derek Norris, and James Shields in the offseason, and were expected to be contenders in the National League West.

Black had been the Padres manager since 2007. He was 649-713 as manager of the Padres and failed to make the playoffs, according to ESPN. In 2010 he was named National League manager of the year after leading the Padres to a 90-72 record, which was there most wins since 1998. The Padres haven’t had a winning season since then and haven’t been to the playoffs since 2006.

This season the Padres are 32-33 and are in third place in the NL West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. The Padres have finished in third place the last two seasons.
