Several men jailed for attack on Malala Yousafzai acquitted

After Pakistani officials announced that 10 men arrested in connection with the attack on teenage activist Malala Yousafzai had received lengthy prison sentences, new information contradicts that and points to some of them being freed.

In April, we noted that authorities in the country said that the 10 men were found guilty and received 25 years behind bars.

Yousafzai was shot in the head in 2012 and suspicions about the gunman had long been a mystery until it was announced that they were all convicted. Now though, a source has countered that information and said that most of those men were actually freed.

The Mirror reported that a Pakistani security source has said that officials lied about 10 of the men being sent to prison for any length of time. The source claims that in fact, only two of the men are still jailed while eight were secretly acquitted.

The same source went on to say that the acquittals were done in secret to “avoid a media fuss.”

The men still in prison are serving life terms, which in Pakistan is 25 years.
