Shark attacks along Carolina coast soar, latest victim remains in serious condition

Shark attacks along the Carolina coast claimed six victims in less than three weeks and as of Sunday, the latest victim remained in serious condition.

Outerbanksvoice.com reported that an 18-year-old male was bitten by a shark on Saturday afternoon around 4 p.m. on Hatteras Island in Rodanthe, North Carolina. He suffered injuries to his legs, buttocks and both hands and was airlifted to the hospital.

Upon arrival at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia, the teen was listed in critical condition, but later upgraded to serious. His condition remained the same on Sunday.

Saturday’s attack was the latest to occur over the past few weeks and the third to occur this past weekend in the Carolinas.

As FoxNews.com noted, a 47-year-old man was attacked in Avon, North Carolina on Friday. That same day a 43-year-old man was attacked miles away in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Earlier this month two children lost limbs in separate attacks along the Carolina coastline.

Some experts believe that the spike in shark attacks in due to fishing on the beaches. But others blame the attacks on the sharks moving into the shallows as they follow sea turtles, which hatch their eggs on the beach.
