St. Louis Rams cut Bud Sasser due to health conditions

The St. Louis Rams released rookie wide receiver Bud Sasser on Thursday. The release is a result of a pre-existing heart condition.

Sasser had the required physicals from the team done before last month’s rookie orientation. However after having multiple tests done he wasn’t physically cleared to play. He signed his rookie contract on Tuesday and will get his signing bonus of $113,737, according to ESPN. Sasser will be released with a nonfootball-related illness designation.

"It's a little frustrating, just have to wait for this whole physical thing to go through and that's all I can do is just wait," Sasser said during orientation. "That's for them, their whole staff to be looking at that. I have to play the waiting game. I'm just waiting on the physical at this point."

The Rams selected Sasser in the sixth round of this year’s draft. He was a standout receiver at Missouri. Last year he had 77 receptions for 1,003 yards and 12 touchdowns at Missouri, according to NFL.com. Despite that success Sasser wasn’t invited to participate in the NFL scouting combine or any postseason all-star games.

With Sasser’s release the Rams don’t have a lot of depth at the wide receiver position. The Rams wide receivers are now Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, and Brian Quick.
