'The Simpsons': Homer and Marge to 'legally separate,' says Al Jean

Homer and Marge Simpson have been together so long, despite Homer’s often stupid behavior, that it seemed like a marriage made to last forever. However, it looks like the marriage will be on the rocks in The Simpsons’ 27th season.

In an interview with Variety, executive producer Al Jean teased that the season premiere will feature the famous couple legally separating when Homer falls for a pharmacist, voiced by Lena Dunham. Two other Girls stars will voice characters in the same episode.

“In the premiere, it’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage,” Jean said. “Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham. We’ll have cameos from the other women from Girls.”

Jean also confirmed that Sideshow Bob will get to do something he has wanted to do for 25 years. Over the weekend, he said that this involves Sideshow Bob finally killing Bart, albeit in this season’s “Treehouse of Horror” episode. Spider Pig is also set to make a return this season.

Since The Simpsons is a cartoon that still hasn’t allowed Maggie to grow up, it will be interesting to see if Homer and Marge’s split lasts longer than once episode.

The new season of The Simpsons will be the first without Harry Shearer, who has voiced several of the show’s iconic characters since 1989.

Fox has already renewed The Simpsons for two more seasons, ensuring that it will continue to be the longest-running animated show and sitcom in American TV history. The new season will air on Sundays, starting in September.
