‘Minions’ laughs up $6.2 million at box office, heading for $100 million

Minions is looking for a bigger opening weekend than Pixar’s Inside Out this weekend and got off on the right foot last night at Thursday showings.

The movie, a prequel to Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me films, started with $6.2 million last night. That’s up from Despicable Me 2’s $4.7 million start in 2013, notes TheWrap. It’s also more than Inside Out’s $3.7 million start last month.

Minions is expected to hit over $100 million this weekend, which is better than any of the other Despicable Me movies. The first one made $56.3 million in its first weekend, while the second made $83.5 million.

In addition, Minions has already been released in several major international markets, grossing $141 million. The movie only cost $74 million to make and features the voices of Jon Hamm, Sandra Bullock and Michael Keaton.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros.’ horror movie The Gallows made $900,000 from Thursday screenings.

The other movie hitting theaters this weekend is Ryan Reynolds’ Self/less.
