Henry Cavill: 'Batman v. Superman' isn't a 'Man of Steel' sequel

When Batman v. Superman was first announced, it was talked about as essentially a sequel to Man of Steel, but now according to Henry Cavill that really isn't the case.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Cavill clarified that Batman v. Superman shouldn't be thought of as Man of Steel 2, and it's as much Batman's story as it is Superman's.

"As far as the individual character is concerned, this is not a Superman sequel,” he said. “It’s more of an introduction to Batman, an opening to Justice League, and an expansion of the world that was created in Man of Steel.”

Will there still be a proper Man of Steel 2, then? DC has announced their movie calendar all the way up to 2020, and that doesn't include any Superman movies, but Cavill says there's still room for another installment. He said there's still plenty of time for a Man of Steel sequel once DC has established a more expansive movie universe.

DC's priority at the moment does seem to be building their cinematic universe to be more like Marvel's, introducing plenty of new characters in the next few years including the new Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, the Suicide Squad team, Shazam, Cyborg and Green Lantern. In fact those first four will all be making their debut in Batman v. Superman, as we previously reported.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
