Ivana Trump says Daily Beast rape story is ‘without merit,’ Donald Trump attorney apologizes for comments

An attorney for Donald Trump who lashed out at the Daily Beast has apologized for his comments on rape. At the same time though, Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana Trump, called the story “totally without merit.”

As we reported earlier this morning, the Daily Beast did a story on a deposition Ivana gave in the early ‘90s during her divorce from Trump. The story pulled quotes from Harry Hurt’s Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, in which she called a 1989 incident between the two “rape.”

Trump Organization special counsel Michael Cohen responded to the Daily Beast by claiming that spousal rape was not possible. “... Understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse,” Cohen told the site. “It is true. You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.” Cohen also threatened the Daily Beast with a $500 million lawsuit.

He later sent a statement to CNN, apologizing for his incorrect statement on rape, which he says he doesn’t believe.

“Mr. Trump didn't know of his comments but disagrees with them," Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski also told CNN about the comments.

Ivana, who was married to Trump from 1977 to 1992, also sent a statement to CNN in which she blasted the Daily Beast for using her comments.

“I have recently read some comments attributed to me from nearly 30 years ago at a time of very high tension during my divorce from Donald,” Ivana said. “The story is totally without merit. Donald and I are the best of friends and together have raised three children that we love and are very proud of. I have nothing but fondness for Donald and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. Incidentally, I think he would make an incredible president.”
