Magic of Disney Animation at Disney's Hollywood Studios to finally close

The Magic of Disney Animation is dead. Well, at least just the attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that explained how that magic worked. Walt Disney World confirmed this week that the attraction will be torn down.

The Orlando Sentinel confirmed on Monday that the attraction will shutter on July 12. An Animation Gallery section will stay open through late August.

“Work is underway on a new experience, and we look forward to sharing more information in the future,” a Disney World spokesman told the Sentinel.

The Magic of Disney Animation opened in 1989 as one of Disney/MGM Studios’ inaugural attractions. At the time, Disney opened a new animation studios, where animators worked on Roger Rabbit shorts, Mulan and Lilo & Stitch. Visitors were able to see animators hard at work on those films, but the studios were closed in 2004. As Cartoon Brew notes, the attraction remained alive to show visitors a behind-the-scenes video on how animated films are made.

Disney World dropped the MGM name in 2008 and renamed the whole park Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney CEO Bob Iger said that another name change will be coming soon to the park, which has also seen the American Idol Experience and Studios Backlot Tour close.

Since Hollywood Studios is already the home of Star Tours and the Star Wars Weekend events, it will likely be the place where more Star Wars rides are built.
