Obama names three new National Monuments

President Barack Obama named three more National Monuments by using the Antiquities Act. The three new monuments are located in California, Texas and Nevada.

The first is Berryessa Snow Mountain in California, which is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the state. It is only 100 miles away from the Sacramento and Bay Area regions and has plenty of opportunity for recreation.

Next is Waco Mammoth in Texas, which has well-preserved remains of Columbian Mammoths and remains of other ancient animals like the saber-toothed cat and giant tortoise.

And finally, there’s Basin and Range in Nevada, which includes around 704,000 acres with prehistoric rock art and other cultural sites. Artist Michael Heizer has also been constructing his City sculpture in the desert there since the 1970s, notes The New York Times.

According to The White House, Obama has established or expanded 19 national monuments, protecting over 260 million acres of land and water, more than any other president. The Antiquities Act was signed into law in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
