Serena Williams drops out of Swedish Open

Someone other than Serena Williams might win the Swedish Open this weekend. Williams has had to pull out of what would have been her first tournament since winning Wimbledon last weekend.

“I was having some pain in my elbow, and I felt a little bit in my match,” Williams told the Associated Press, reports The Los Angeles Times. “But this morning it really exploded .... I really couldn't hit serves.”

Williams did beat Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure on Wednesday, winning 6-2, 6-1, notes the AP.

On Saturday, Williams won Wimbledon for the sixth time, completing the second “Serena Slam” of her career. That means that she’s won all four Grand Slams in a single calendar year - the U.S., Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon.

The 2015 U.S. Open starts on Aug. 31. If Williams, 33, wins that, she will be the first woman to win the four Grand Slam events in a single season since Steffi Graf did it in 1988.
