Tom Cruise will do ‘Top Gun 2,’ but he can’t have CG jets

Tom Cruise loves doing his own crazy stunts. After all, you can see him hanging from a plane in the Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation trailers. So obviously, if Cruise is going to make a Top Gun 2, he can’t allow there be be CG jets in the film.

During an interview with Extra at the Vienna premiere for Rogue Nation, Cruise said that the project is still being talked about with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, but hasn’t gotten very far. However, if he does do it, he wants there to be practical jets. It’s his one request.

“If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do, I’d like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets,” Cruise said. “I’m saying right now no CGI on the jets. If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.”

Cruise’s comments come after Skydance’s David Ellison told Collider about his vision for the film. He said that writer Justin Marks has cooked up a story that will put Maverick (Cruise) in a world where drones are outnumbering fighter pilots.

“This world has not been explored,” Ellison told Collider. “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie.”

Top Gun 2 has been in the works for years and is still without a director. Tony Scott, the director of the first film, died in August 2012.
