2.5 magnitude earthquake reported in New Jersey

Residents in central New Jersey said they were awoken by an earthquake early Friday morning.

NJ.com reported that the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that a small 2.5 magnitude quake hit around 3:40 a.m. Dozens of people in Morristown, Morris Township, Randolph, Mendham Township, Mendham Borough, Chester Township and Chester Borough said that they felt a bit of shaking.

The Associated Press noted that some witnesses reported hearing what sounded like an explosion.

"It lasted one second, but it was definitely loud enough and physically violent enough to wake everyone up," said Stuart Heiser, who was visiting family in Morris.

There was no damage to any property or any injuries reported.

Small earthquakes in the region are not uncommon with the last one occurring in December and measuring 1.9 on the Richter scale. Prior to that, a quake was reported in Nov. 2012. According to USGS, at least one quake can be felt in the area every two to three years.
