Director of new Japanese 'Godzilla' promises scariest film of series

The King of the Monsters is finally returning in Japan after a 12 year break, and the director is promising the scariest Godzilla film yet.

According to ABC News, director Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) is promising that his upcoming Godzilla revival will be the most terrifying yet, bringing the series back to its horror roots.

After the franchise became increasingly complicated, Higuchi noted he hopes to take the new Godzilla back to the basics while still surprising the audience. The director went on to say that he's a huge fan of all the Godzilla movies, even the bad ones. And there are a lot of bad ones.

"I'm confident I am among the top-50 lovers of Godzilla in the world. That's how much I love Godzilla," he said. "Maybe I'm not in the top 10, but definitely in the top 50."

Higuchi couldn't reveal any further details, but production on Godzilla is set to begin next month at Toho studios in Tokyo. The success of the Gareth Edwards reboot in America, which Higuchi referred to as a masterpiece, is what convinced Toho they needed to bring back Godzilla as well.

Meanwhile, a sequel to the 2014 American Godzilla is also on the way. Gareth Edwards will return to direct, and this time Godzilla will be fighting Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah, as we previously reported. With two franchises running simultaneously in the U.S. and Japan, it's a pretty amazing time to be a Godzilla fan.
