They broke up in Dec. 2014 and the former Harry Potter star said even before they split, in order to cope, she went on a retreat in Canada that forced her to stay silent for one week.

"I felt really uncomfortable," she told Vogue UK of the split. "Even before my relationship ended, I went on a silent retreat, because I really wanted to figure out how to be at home with myself."

She stayed at a private resort in the Rocky Mountains and didn’t talk for seven days straight.

Despite the “horrendous” break-up, she said overall she’s had good relationships with men. She has felt "really cherished. They've built me up," she said of past boyfriends.

"I certainly haven't found that with doing all that I do or being all that I am, that I've struggled in my love life,” said. "I just think it's very patronizing towards men. It undermines them."

Watson also opened up about being appointed Goodwill Ambassador for U.N. Women and starting the HeForShe campaign for gender equality.

"Part of me relaxed after I took on that position, it gave me a sense of belonging and purpose,” she said.
