Former US president Jimmy Carter’s cancer spread to his brain

Former president Jimmy Carter said Thursday that his cancer has now spread to his brain and he would be receiving radiation treatments later in the day.

NBC News noted that Carter made the announcement while speaking at a news conference in Atlanta.

As we previously reported, the 90-year-old revealed his cancer diagnosis just last week.

He said the melanoma found in his liver was removed during a procedure on Aug. 3 and doctors told him that there are four small spots on his brain.

"I do have deep religious faith, which I'm very grateful for, and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't go into an attitude of despair or anger or anything like that," Carter said after receiving the diagnosis. "I was just completely at ease."

Carter was the nation’s 39th president. Prior to that, he was the governor of Georgia. Since leaving the White House he has done a great deal of charitable work and founded the Carter Center.
