Hollywood’s top-grossing movies still feature mostly men, white characters and hardly any LGBT characters

Hollywood has a diversity problem. That itself is not news, but a new study shined a light on just how big a problem it is for the top-grossing films released between 2007 and 2014.

The study, by the Media, Diversity & Social Change Initiative at USC Annenberg, looked at the 100 top-grossing films from each year between 2007 and 2014 (except for 2011). researchers looked at the actors and actresses in front of the camera and those working behind them.

While looking at these 700 films, the researchers found that just 30.2 percent of the 30,835 speaking parts went to women. In 2014 along, just 21 of the 100 top-grossing films featured a female lead role. That was actually down from 2013’s 28 films with female leads.

In the 2014 films, there were no females over 45 with a lead role. Only three were from minorities and none were lesbian or bisexual characters.

Behind the scenes, only two top-grossing films films were directed by women in 2014 (in 2007, three were directed by women). In total, 28 of the 700 films analyzed were directed by women and only three of them were African American.

The breakdown of actors and creators by race is just as jarring. In 2014, 73.1 percent of main characters Were white, 12.5 percent were Black, 4.9 percent were Hispanic/Latino., 5.3 percent were Asian and 2.9 percent were Middle Eastern. These numbers were relatively stagnant between 2007 and 2014.

The LGBT community was barely represented in 2014’s top grossers. Only 19 speaking roles went to a lesbian, gay or bisexual character. There were no transexual characters. All of these 19 characters were in just 14 of the 100 movies.

Again, several studies have already shown that Hollywood films fail to reflect the diversity of the U.S. and the rest of the world. It is worth noting that this new study only focused on the biggest movies of each year and plenty of indie films do feature diversity. But that doesn’t make it right for Hollywood to just sit back and not try to add some diversity to blockbusters.
